“Because it’s such a high, open cylindrical structure, Big Ass Fans are the perfect fit for this space.”

Project Summary

Enlisting the services of Roger D. Fields and Associates, the Columbus Recreation and Parks department sought to improve occupant comfort in two athletic complexes without the addition of costly and energy-intensive air con. In the summer, the Bill McDonald Athletic Complex and Willis Athletic Complex were subject to extreme heat and condensation. During the winter, heated air from the forced-air system collected at the ceiling, making it difficult and expensive to maintain uniform temperatures throughout the Quonset Hut structures.

Chris Swanson, LEED AP BD+C, mechanical engineer with Roger D. Fields and Associates, worked with Big Ass Fans’ project consultants and applications engineers to specify the correct fans for the complexes. “Because it’s such a high, open cylindrical structure, Big Ass Fans are the perfect fit,” Swanson said. “I became more familiar with ASHRAE 55 and the use of elevated air speeds to reduce perceived temperatures. If we eventually add AC, we’ll be able to minimise the air con load as well.”
